Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
These three short verses give us the most basic instructions for a joyous, happy, and more God-honoring life. Paul doesn’t say go on every mission trip possible, only listen to or eat certain things, or give all of your money to such-and-such cause…. He gives three simple tasks or us to dwell on, which epitomize the life of a Christian.
1. Rejoice always. Always be on the lookout for the awesome things God has done and is doing- despite your circumstance! And when you rejoice, it is meant to be shared! Rejoice in the good news of the Gospel. In fact- be so overfilled with joy that it seep out of you into others!
2. Pray without ceasing. Be in constant communication with God. Tell him your thoughts, He already knows. Seek His help in everything. Always be in the Spirits presence (through prayer and fellowship).
3. Give thanks in all circumstances. You want a better life? Always look for a reason to be thankful. Make the glass half full and the grass bright green. Give than when it’s hard. Give thanks when its easy. Give thanks when someone goes out of their way to compliment you, even if you don’t feel like it. And when you are so caught up in being thankful, you can’t help but to rejoice. (see step one…)
Way too many people- including good, Christian people- rely on antidepressants, drugs, alcohol, and other forms of gratification for happiness.
Do yourself a favor: save money, be healthy, and listen to our brother Paul.
Father God, may we always be seeking Your joy through the truth of Your word. Thank you for supplying us with Your truth. May we, like Paul, always strive to glorify you with our lives. Open our eyes to circumstances for which we can rejoice, burden our hearts with the need to pray incessantly, and remind us to be thankful whether we are in the valley or on the mountaintop.
